French Bulldog History

Unless you are from another planet, French Bulldogs have quickly become one of the most popular breeds of dog in the world.  They are also known as Frenchies to most people. They originate from France and are a mix between the local dogs of Paris and the English Bulldog.  There is a large number of Mastiffs in their DNA, however you wouldn’t know because they aren’t tough or noble.  They were intentionally bred to be a lap dog or to live as a companion animal.  If you were a European aristocrat that was alive during the 1700-1800s, you had a Frenchie or were painted with them.  It was a great sign of nobility at that time.  Over time they have maintained their goofy personalities and now the 2ndmost popular breed in the US today.

They are a calm and snuggly dog.  They don’t require lots of exercise, so they make a great dog if you live in a small house or apartment.  They also don’t bark much but they need lots of love and companionship. If they don’t get that, they tend to be nervous, anxious and unhappy.  They aren’t the smartest of all dogs, but they seem to learn house rules quicker than most as they are a clean breed.

They typically get along with other dogs and are great with small kids.  As with English Bulldogs and other short nosed breeds, be extra cautious in the hot weather.  Heat doesn’t agree with them and can die quickly if they overheat.  Keep a keen eye out for them while they are exercising as it is not easy for them to catch their breath.

As with English Bulldogs, they do make good mothers, but are difficult to breed naturally.  They will usually need to get an AI from the vet and will require a C-section birth.  Not always but typically is recommended.  Expect to pay more for them because of their popularity and how hard it is to breed them. In our opinion, they are well worth the cost as few other dogs are as loving and affectionate.

Brief History of the English Bulldog

Bulldogs of old had a much different use and temperament than what we see today.  They were used to bait bulls.  As time went on and that practice wasn’t carried out, the breed numbers diminished. People still loved the dogs so they continued to breed them.  Bulldogs are great with their offspring but are horrible at reproduction.  They will typically always need to be artificially inseminated and have C-sections.

Even though they no longer bull bait, Bulldogs are still beloved for their endearing appearances and personality.  They still carry the same stocky frame with wide head and shoulders. They have a pronounced underbite and a short muzzle.  They will typically have black, wide set eyes.  They have nose folds that are called rope and is a signature feature of a Bulldog.  Typically, these need to be cleaned on a regular basis to avoid moisture accumulation and to avoid infections.

Colors of the Bulldog are solid red and fawn, black and gold and piebald.  Their coat should be flat, short, sleek.

Bulldogs do not require and should not over exercise. They have very small nostrils and could suffer from Brachycephalic Upper Airway Syndrome.  This will cause difficulty in breathing and to keep cool. Take extra precautions if you live in a hot area and during summer months.

Costs for having a litter is more than most, they are still one of the more expensive dogs you can buy.  There are no other breeds that are as loving and affectionate as an English Bulldog.

Don’t get scammed when you are Buying a Bulldog or French Bulldog

Easy Steps to follow when buying your Puppy online

Every day we see so many beautiful puppies online.  You have found the one of your dreams online, however it’s important to take a step back and make sure that it’s not a scam and that you are buying from a breeder with a good reputation.  Here are some tips and tricks to help out.

  1.  Look up the breeder online.  Google them.  Check them out on Facebook, Instagram, their website.  Make sure the profile wasn’t just created.  Look at their friends on. Facebook as they should have a bunch if they use it for business.  Looks at the postings to get a good feel.  Check out their reviews on google and Facebook.
  2. Look at what the pricing is of your Bulldog or Frenchie.  If the price is too good to believe, then don’t, it’s probably a scam. If in the case it was legit, you get what you pay for, most likely a sick puppy that will cost you thousands over the puppy’s lifetime.
  3. Does the breeder have a phone number and are their name listed to the website?  If not, it’s probably a scam.
  4. Ask to come and visit the puppy or an on-site visit.  Most won’t let you come to their homes, but FaceTime is an appropriate alternative.  Breeders need to be cautious of diseases from the outside to protect their dogs.  Also, if the dogs have not had their first round of shots, this is very dangerous to the puppy.
  5. Make sure there is a contract in place.  Good breeders will put everything in writing.
  6. Don’t send a wire or money order that is untraceable.
  7. Always trust your instincts.  If you don’t feel comfortable with your transaction, don’t do it.  Trust yourself.

How to Breed Your English Bulldog

Part 4 – Bulldog puppies are here, now what?

Make sure the Mother is doing her natural thing. After the C-section, the vet will tie the umbilical cord and take the puppy out of the placental membrane.  Only in the case of an emergency natural whelping, will the Bulldog or Frenchie mom do those things.

Bulldog Puppies need to feed. Frenchie puppies and Bulldog Puppies should feed soon after they are born.  Mom might be groggy for a while after the C-section, so you will have to help at first.  Sucking should come naturally so work with each puppy to make sure they are doing this as you might need to help.  We also ask the vet for plasma to be spun down from the mother to get the antibodies to the puppies immediately.  This will help prevent infections as their immune system to develop faster.

Puppy temperature.   Keep the puppies warm.  When not with the mother, we keep them in an incubator for the first 10 days. Keeping the temperature about 85 but more importantly it pumps oxygen into that small space to help.  We reduce the temp about 5 degrees each week until 75 by week 4.

Canine Mastitis-This can happen for nursing moms in the few weeks of nursing.  The breasts might look normal, warm and large, however canine mastitis can cause them to be hot, dark, red and painful to the mom.  Take her to the vet if you notice this.

Rejected Puppies. A Bulldog for French Bulldog mother may reject a puppy from time to time.  Usually it’s for a reason.  You are going to have to hand feed this puppy as her temperament towards the puppy most likely won’t change.  Once again, consult your vet for a plan of action.

How to Breed Your English Bulldog

Part 3 – Pregnancy Care for your Bulldog

The Diet. We will typically keep the female’s diet exactly the same as normal.  When she starts to gain weight, we will add a bit more food accordingly as we see fit. Adding things like coconut oil are important to keep her coat nice.  She will eat as needed so you know your bulldog.  Also, maybe feed multiple times instead of just once daily.

C-section. We will only breed by this method.  This is a common method for both Frenchies and Bulldogs. The heads of the puppies are so large, naturally whelping is not ideal and could kill the mother.  Have the C-section lined up with your vet, so they are ready to go.

The whelping box. Get her acquainted with this area at least a week before the due date.  We use a tiny plastic pool but any small box with low edges should work.  We line it with blankets on top of the heating pads, but you can also use newspaper or other things like that.  It should have a small shelf that the puppies can roll under to avoid getting smashed by mom. This should be away from other dogs, especially other females in heat or that have had puppies recently.  Let her try and nest while you are waiting for bulldog puppies or French bulldog puppies.

Items to have ready. You should be prepared for anything and not have to react after the fact.  Heating pads or lamps are a necessity.  You should have feeding tubes and bottles, scissors, artificial milk, clean towels and bedding and latex gloves.  There are many other things, but the point is be ready.

Signs of labor. The first stage is 24 hours and your Bulldog or Frenchie will start to become restless, going off their food and won’t be able to settle.  Check her temperature as it will drop below 100.  Have your vet on standby.

Prepare for the arrival of the puppies. Second-stage labor is the pushing phase of labor when the pups should be born. Her water will break, and she will lie down and strain hard, pushing with her flanks, in order to try and expel the puppy. If she labors hard for two hours and no puppy appears, call the veterinarian. Now it’s time to go to the vet and get that C-section.

How to Breed Your English Bulldog

Part 2 –How to Mate your Bulldog at the right time

Know your bulldog. Her first heat cycle will happen between 6 months and 18 months.  After that it should happen every six months.  Her heat cycle should last about 3 weeks.  With this information, you can ideally know when the heat is starting, but you are still going to need to know what days during the heat to mate your dog.

Now she is in heat, what now. The first part of the Bulldogs heat cycle is called proestrus. The vagina will be swollen and much larger than usual.  There will also be a lot of blood.  Your Bulldog will not let the male Bulldog mate with her yet.  It’s a waste of time on your part.  This is more of the get ready part.  This part typically will last about 7-10 days.

Testing for ovulation. As the first stage of her heat is coming to an end, this is when you start to start testing the progesterone levels of your female Bulldog.  Your local vet will be able to do these tests for you.  The exact time to breed at this point is debatable by most vets and breeders, but most will agree to mate after the levels reach 5 ng/ml.

Breeding time, finally.  Once the female has reached the 5 ng/ml level, this part of the cycle is called estrus.  Now is the time to breed.  The female Bulldog will now allow the male to mate with her.  Sometimes even rubbing her tail, she will move it aside showing you that she is ready to be mated.  Ovulation usually starts 2 days into estrus and can last anywhere from 5 to 8 days.

Artificial Insemination. Breeding Bulldogs naturally isn’t the best idea.  French Bulldogs are a bit easier, but we still encourage artificial for best results. Bulldogs have short legs and stout bodies that make it difficult to mate naturally.  Also, once connected, they are so powerful, issues may arise as they try and pull apart from each other.  Now you must collect the male’s semen and put it into the female’s vagina, and into the uterus by way of a syringe.  Keeping the temperature of the semen is vital so be careful.  Other methods of getting cooled and frozen semen work as well, but the odds are severely decreased.

Diagnose the pregnancy. Pregnancy for an English Bulldog or French Bulldog lasts about 61 days from first insemination. The easiest way we use is going to the vet and getting an ultrasound after 30-35 days.  This should also give you an approximate litter size as well.

How to Breed Your English Bulldog

Part 1- Chose a Suitable Mate

Understand the responsibility of breeding. If you do not have a long-term commitment to the breed of dog you are working with, just stop now.  The health and safety of the female and her puppies should be your concern here.  You should be an expert in the breed before you begin.  What we see is a lot of people jumping in thinking its super easy to do.  The pricing on breeding English Bulldog Puppies and French Bulldog Puppies are high for a reason.  It takes time and money and most important patience.  Bulldogs are a unique breed and there are too many backyard breeders in North Texas, Dallas and all over the US.  The sad part is most forums where these types of breeders post their girls and puppies don’t allow negative feedback and they are only looking to line their pockets with cash.  In the end, this is not good for the breed itself and causes fluxuations in the market that otherwise wouldn’t exist.

Test your Bulldog before you breed.  Here at Ballpark Bulldogs, this one seems like a no brainer, but you would be surprised.  ALL responsible breeders will spend the money to test for genetic diseases in their bulldogs. If they can’t show you the paperwork, just walk away.  If a DR couldn’t show you a certificate about his training to become a DR, you wouldn’t use that DR.  Bulldogs have breathing issues due to them having flat faces, large tongues, and small windpipes. If either of the mating pair of bulldogs has had to have surgery in order to open up their nostrils, trim back parts of their soft palates, or remove their tonsils, do not breed them. Their genetics will be passed onto the puppies and will perpetuate these distressing problems.  This could have been stopped if you had tested from the get-go.

What is the female’s temperament? Science has proven that the mother’s character is passed down to her offspring. If the mom is aggressive or nervous or any other non-ideal characteristics, you probably shouldn’t breed her.  Look for more ideal behavior patterns.  Calm, gentle, non-aggressive, compassionate bulldogs are ideal.  This will also help be a better mother as well.

Check the Bulldog for mites. As with any breed, keep your puppy clean.  Make sure their skin is healthy and has no parasites.  If your female has demodex, the stress of pregnancy could make this worse. Then, the demodex mites are passed down to the puppies.  So, in addition to health issues, that would make selling puppies extremely difficult if their coats don’t look good in pictures.  You can also get these mites on your hands when washing or handling them.

Take your Bulldog for a Checkup at the Vet – Before you are about to breed, go and get a checkup.  Make sure she is up to date on shots and worming and working. They usually can’t take these once pregnant.  Make sure both mom and dad have been tested for STDs and brucellosis.  Both of these have the potential to cause a spontaneous abortion or kill them once born.

Don’t Breed before the second cycle. This one is simple so just don’t do it.  It can kill your Bulldog and all science suggests they are not fully grown.  She will go into heat in 6 months.  Just wait.
